Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) was named the top global semiconductor manufacturer for the January-March period, according to the latest report from Counterpoint Research.

Specifically, it allegedly controlled the 70%'s application processor (AP), system-on-chip (SoC) and mobile modems entering smartphone chipsets. Second came Samsung Foundry with a 30% market share.

The global smartphone chipset market saw a 5% drop in shipments compared to Q1 2021, although revenues for the same period were 23% higher now. Still, chipset shipments originating from TSMC fell by 9% year-over-year. Η Samsung was the leader in smartphone chipset nodes for Q1 2022 with a 60% share thanks to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

TSMC is expected to dominate the rest of the year with the 4nm node used in the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. Qualcomm, MediaTek and Apple are expected to use TSMC's 4nm node.
