Η Samsung display discontinues production of LCD panels six months earlier than originally planned. According to industry insiders, the competition was too fierce and the group wanted to cut losses.

Going forward, the tech giant will focus on OLED and QD (quantum-dot) panel manufacturing, with LCD workers said to be transferring to the QD division.

Display Supply Chain Consultants revealed that the price of an LCD is at 36.6% compared to what it was in January 2014. This drop is related to the fact that manufacturers such as BOE from China and AU Optronics from Taiwan are offering the product at lower prices.

Samsung Display's LCD division was originally scheduled to close in 2020, but then came Covid-19 which brought an increase in the need for affordable home entertainment devices, so the issue was postponed.
